Early this year, Houzz.com published predicted trends in home remodeling for 2019. According to their article titled “32 Home Design Trends That Will Rule in 2019”, these predictions were inspired by a search through Houzz data, hundreds of home design photos, past articles and professional designers. Based on the information collected, consideration was given to six areas of the home: kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, laundry rooms, exteriors and home tech. The original article is rather lengthy, so we have put together a synopsis of the findings, hopefully inspiring you and your home renovations moving forward.

Kitchens

In 2019, kitchen features are largely about creating warmth, breaking with tradition and making a connection to the outside world. Top trends we are expected to see more of:

  • Full-tile backsplash feature walls: Tile from countertops to ceiling, creating a striking feature wall and good focal point for open layouts.
  • Window walls: Using more efficient modern cabinetry in the kitchen to free up wall space and creating expansive sets of windows.
  • More wood: Heavier usage of wood materials, adding warmth and character to the kitchen, not to mention pairing well with the still-present trend toward farmhouse style design.
  • Cabinets in cream: Instead of focusing on a bright, stark scheme of white, more folks are moving toward the off-whites and creams, giving more of a cozier, warmer atmosphere to the heart of the home.
  • Quartz countertops: Engineered quartz is BIG, and it’s easy to understand why. The natural stone and resin compound is super durable and can mimic the sophisticated look of the more delicate materials like slate and marble.
  • Emerald and deep teal islands: In line with a trend toward darker, moodier colors, these jewel tones are being seen a lot more as a pop of color to neutral palettes.
  • Variations on white subway tile backsplashes: The white subway tile backsplash has been quite popular for a while now, but has given way to fresher variations through size, shape and patterns like herringbone, chevron and stacked.
  • Custom drawer inserts in different colors or stain: It’s the details that count here. Adding a surprising color or stain to the inside of drawers gives a special touch to these frequently accessed spaces.
  • Large sliding and collapsible doors from kitchen to the outdoors: A step beyond the window walls, the trend here is to eliminate the division between inside and outside and give a sense of expanded space.
  • Countertop cabinets: One of the many burgeoning efficiencies in cabinetry is to bring cabinet space down to the countertop, making often accessed items easier to reach.
  • Black accents: Homeowners are getting more confident with alternative color schemes and experimenting with black range hoods, island accents and cabinetry. The move is a bold one, but really tends to add a dose of elegance and sophistication.
  • Abstract island shapes: Taking the natural shape of the kitchen into consideration when building an island is a popular concept online. Less traditional rectangles, more echoing of the kitchen’s personality itself.
  • Gray, white and wood: Still popular is this neutral, forgiving combination.
